Performance objective

You are required to deliver and evaluate a presentation that informs and engages your target audience. You must implement techniques to review the effectiveness of your presentation and identify possibilities for improvement.

You will need to demonstrate an understanding of the principles of effective communication.

Assessment description

This assessment task requires you to implement your plan for a 15 minute presentation on a topic of your choice and deliver it to an audience of your colleagues/classmates.

You are required to collect feedback on your presentation and evaluate it using an appropriate evaluation method. Finally, you will need to write a three paragraph reflection and propose improvements for future presentations.


Part A: Prepare and deliver presentation

       1.      Using the written presentation plan developed in Assessment Task 1, on a topic relevant to your occupation or personal interests, prepare to deliver the presentation.

       2.      Confirm the date and time for your presentation, as negotiated with your assessor in Assessment Task 1.

       3.      Confirm, or modify, the written plan developed for your presentation in Assessment Task 1.

       4.      Using digital technology, collect any presentation aids you may have created as part of Assessment Task 1 that you will need for delivery of your presentation.

       5.      Complete the materials checklist template provided at the end of this assessment task (see Appendix 1).

       6.      Prepare the venue to make sure it is safe (e.g. no trip hazards).

       7.      Deliver your 15 minute presentation.

       8.      Collect feedback using the evaluation method/s you have chosen.

Part B: Reflection

       1.      Write a reflection that includes:

                          a.       what was effective

                          b.       what was ineffective

                          c.       strategies for improvement

                          d.       discussion of feedback from audience and persons involved.

       2.      You should also describe and discuss:

                          a.       the principles of effective communication

                          b.       the range of supporting presentation aids and materials.


You must:

      deliver a 15 minute presentation to an audience

      submit a copy of any revisions to your presentation plan, from Assessment Task 1, including the materials checklist

      submit a copy of any handouts or other material used (e.g. printouts of PowerPoint slides), if changed from Assessment Task 1

      submit a copy of any surveys or questionnaires used to collect feedback

      submit a copy of the briefing document, and revisions, for others involved in the presentation

      submit a brief written reflection on the feedback collected, due no later than one week after the presentation delivery.

Your assessor will be looking for:

      a presentation plan that shows structure, sequence and timing and identifies the intended outcomes, to convey ideas and information in an engaging way

      choice of presentation strategies, format and delivery methods matching the characteristics of the target audience, location, and resources required

      persuasive communication techniques to secure and maintain audience interest

      clearly communicated roles and responsibilities; any guest speakers must have a clear idea of what you expect of them

      delivery of the presentation that matches your presentation plan

      the use of both verbal and non-verbal techniques to sustain audience engagement (as well as communicating in a culturally appropriate manner)

      opportunities for the audience to seek clarification on central ideas and concepts, e.g. in Q&A

      summaries of key concepts and ideas at strategic points

      discussion of reactions to the presentation from participants or from guest speakers involved in the presentation

      a brief written reflection which concisely summarises the gathered feedback and identifies possible improvements for future presentations

      demonstration of effective presentation methods

      presentation that abides by organisational and legislative requirements (e.g. for privacy and safety issues)

      demonstration of knowledge of the principles of effective communication

      identified opportunities for improvement of the planning and delivery of the presentation.

Adjustment for distance-based learners:

The presentation can be adjusted for distance learning. The presentation for this task can be varied to take place on a video conferencing tool available to the learner.

Option 1: Assessor as observer

The assessor can ‘observe’ the learner conducting the presentation via a video conferencing tool.


      Meet with the assessor via a video conferencing tool at the scheduled time and conduct the presentation.

      The learner is to present their informal presentation with the assessor observing.

      Additional evidence (e.g. evaluation sheet, photos, videos etc.) may be required and can be electronic but must conform to the format guidelines provided to the candidate.

      A follow-up interview may be required (at the discretion of the assessor).

      Evidence can be submitted electronically or posted in the mail.

Option 2: Video the presentation

The presentation may involve skills that are too active or complex for video conferencing. This might involve skills or demonstrations of complex tasks.

In these cases, the learner may be able to video the presentation and send it to the assessor.
